This weekend the young hens joined the established flock. We have found the best way to introduce new chickens is to let everyone out to free range. Some small squabbles erupt from time to time, but the work of searching for worms, bugs and tiny frogs wins out. These hens, at sixteen weeks, might be the prettiest yet with all their white and golden lacing on their tail feathers and chests. Because they are a mix of Rhode Island Red and Buff Orpington, they should get big fluffy butts and weigh in between 8-10 pounds when fully mature.
